Dr Peter Mcewen


Chief Executive Officer

Following a first degree at Hatfield Polytechnic, Peter completed his PhD on triatomine bug flight behaviour at Bangor University, North Wales, before moving to Cardiff to work on the control of olive pests. He has published over 70 scientific papers and popular articles, and ran a successful pest management consultancy business for a number of years. Peter's areas of expertise include triatomine bugs, green lacewings and houseflies. He has considerable overseas experience and has travelled and worked in Scandinavia, Spain, South America and the USA.



Managing Director (UK)

Following a first degree from Staffordshire University, Catherine obtained her PhD relating to slug behaviour and control from IACR-Rothamsted. i2LResearch has since developed a leading role and international reputation for R&D and efficacy evaluation of new molluscicides and improved methods of slug control. In addition to this, Catherine also manages all work relating to crop and turf throughout the organisation. This encompasses a large part of the company, routinely working with insecticide, herbicide, fungicide, fertiliser and molluscicide applications across Europe. In March 2005, Catherine opened a branch office of the company in Newcastle, providing an important second geographical site capability for field and glasshouse studies. i2LResearch  (Newcastle) has since gone from strength to strength and currently operates from its own, purpose-built, field station located at Shotley Bridge, County Durham. We currently own 2 hectares of cultivated land, in addition to operating a heated glasshouse complex with extensive commercial polytunnel space. Catherine is a Director of the company.

Head of Sales & Marketing (EU/UK) / Head of Newcastle Office

James graduated from The University of Aberdeen in 2016 with a BSc (Hons) in Human Embryology and Developmental Biology and joined i2LResearch in 2017. Since joining the company James has undertaken a GEP compliance role at Newcastle to assist with implementing and upholding Quality Assurance and Official Recognition compliance which has exposed him to a broad range of crop protection studies.  As the European Trials Coordinator James has developed strong links with other offices and CRO collaborators across Europe, while overseeing registration packages of pan-European efficacy studies over all EPPO Zones. James became Head of Newcastle office in early 2019.

Acting Executive Director (USA)

Edwin Afful, has over a decade of both field and lab experience with an array of bioefficacy related studies. Edwin completed his post-doctoral work at University of Maryland where he gained valuable experience with crop systems and mollusc studies. Edwin, originally from Ghana, obtained his PhD from Kansas State University. When he's not playing the role of Entomologist, Edwin is a father and husband who enjoys watching and playing football.

Edwin joined i2LResearch USA in 2019 and became Acting Executive Director (USA) in April 2021. 


Manager of i2LResearch, S.L. (Southern Europe)

Roger is an agronomy graduate with a long experience in the agricultural production sector. He joined the company in 2015 and since then he has gained experience in crop and non-crop field trials, building up an excellent network of local PCO and farmer collaborators. Roger spends his spare time with his family and friends walking and doing manual work such as basketry or gardening.



Managing Director of i2LResearch EU

Pavel has a Master's in Animal Ecology and a PhD and RNDr. in Zoology from the University of South Bohemia. After working for i2LResearch Ltd in Cardiff for a 6-month period in 2007, Pavel returned to the University of South Bohemia, Czech Republic, to establish and manage our i2LResearch Ltd (Central Europe) office. Pavel has previously worked for 3 years at the Institute of Entomology (Czech Academy of Sciences) as an entomologist.

Director of Quality Assurance

Sean is a Biology graduate, and joined the company in 2010. After having worked as a trials officer and Study Director to both GLP and GEP, in 2011, Sean began his adventure into GLP Quality Assurance (QA) and has continued in this vein since then. The QA role includes conducting biannual in-depth facility inspections for the Cardiff office, as well as organising and maintaining the QA programme e.g. audits of GLP study protocols, study conduct and final reports. An active member of RQA, Sean is involved with the Wales & West Regional Forum. As Quality Controller the net is cast further afield, to the other European/US offices. This involves helping to resolve quality issues across the organisation, conducting GLP training and hosting regulatory inspections. Outside of work Sean enjoys cycling, keeping active and long walks on the beach.



Head of Cardiff Office (UK)

Richard joined the company in 2010 after completing his zoology degree at Aberystwyth University. Richard is a Senior Study Director and has gained experience on a variety of trials covering an extensive range of methodologies, building up many years of experience working to GLP and GEP protocols for our global clientele. Richard is the Head of Cardiff office and ensures projects are delivered to our sponsors in a reliable and timely manner. Richard is a member of the RQA and has good knowledge of GLP principles.
