Dr Peter McEwen (F.R.E.S.) - Managing Director
Following a first degree at Hatfield Polytechnic, Peter completed his PhD on triatomine bug flight behaviour at Bangor University, North Wales, before moving to Cardiff to work on the control of olive pests. He has published over 70 scientific papers and popular articles, and ran a successful pest management consultancy business for a number of years. Peter's areas of expertise include triatomine bugs, green lacewings and houseflies. He has considerable overseas experience and has travelled and worked in Scandinavia, Spain, South America and the USA.
Dr Catherine Whaley - Director - i2LNorthEast
Following a first degree from Staffordshire University, Catherine obtained her Phd 'The action of naturally occurring semiochemicals on feeding behaviour and neurophysiology of the field slug Derocerus reticulatum', from IACR Rothamsted. Catherine has established a large base of national and international clients, including multi-nationals, governmental agencies and small to medium sized commercial companies.
In March 2005 Catherine opened a branch office of the company in Newcastle, providing an important 2nd geographical site capability for field and glasshouse studies. The new office - i2LNorthEast, works closely with Newcastle University, renting space for trials at the excellent Close House field station. i2L NorthEast has been an instant success and currently employs one Study Director, plus temporary staff, carrying out a range of mollusc, horticultural, agricultural, and herbicides trials.
Catherine is also heading up our regulatory advice service – which is seen as an area of rapid growth over the coming year.

Dr Graham Small - Technical Director
Graham has over 14 years experience in pesticide resistance diagnosis, characterisation, monitoring and management and has published extensively in the field. In addition to his research on arthropod pests of agricultural, medical and veterinary importance, he was for 5 years the Commercial Manager for the Pest Management & Ecotoxicology Centre in Cardiff University. Graham will help i2LResearch Ltd extend its service portfolio and will assist the MD in all aspects of marketing.
Graham is a Director of the company.
Helena Waters - Head of Biocides & Professional Products
Helena completed her BSc (Hons) in Zoology at Cardiff university and has been with the company for many years. Her particular expertise includes laboratory, simulated use and field efficacy studies on a wide range of pests, including household and public health, biting, stored product and agricultural pests. She has also experience in biocide regulatory affairs, offering support for registration purposes.
Helena is also involved in methodology development for a range of testing requirements, from initial screening bioassays to full scale field trials, having links with the UK HSE, UK PSD and US EPA authorities.
Helena is a Director of the company.
Charlotte Spencer-Jones - Study Director
Charlotte joined our Cardiff team in 2008 after completing her Bsc (hons) in Biology at Bangor University. She is the health and safety officer and is currently studying for her NEBOSH national general certificate in occupational Health and Safety. Charlotte is also a study director and has worked on a variety of GEP efficacy studies. Charlotte is a trained first aider.
Peter Morrison - Study Director
Peter Morrison started work for i2LResearch LTD in Cardiff as a trials officer in August 2008 following graduation from Cardiff University with a BSc honours degree (1st Class) in Biology, before being promoted to study director in October 2008. Since joining i2L Peter has been involved in a wide range of GEP efficacy trials on various species both in the laboratory and in the field. Peter is also responsible for equipment maintenance at the Cardiff branch of i2LResearch LTD.
Pavel Foltan - Manager of i2LEast
After working for i2LResearch Ltd in Cardiff for a 6 month period in 2007, Pavel returned to the University of South Bohemia, Czech Republic, to manage our i2LEast office. Pavel has a BSc Hons (1st Class) and a Masters in Animal Ecology from the University of South Bohemia, and is currently studying for his Phd.
Honza Okrouhlik - Study Director
Honza is a animal physiologist, who has earned his BSc (Biology) and Masters (Experimental biology) degree at the University of South Bohemia. In addition to his role at i2LEast, he is currently working on his PhD. and teaching animal physiology at the University.
Sarah Barlow - Study Director
Sarah Barlow started work for i2L North East as a Trials Officer in October 2005 having graduated from Newcastle University with a BSc Honours degree in Environmental Biology during that summer, and was promoted to Study Director in January 2007. Since joining i2L North East, Sarah has been involved with a wide range of GEP efficacy studies including whitefly, herbicide, aphid and Lepidoptera glasshouse and field trials but the majority of her work has focused on slug field and caged arena trials. She works under the supervision of Dr Catherine Whaley as part of our team based at Newcastle University's Close House Field Station.
Mr Murray Smedley - Consultant
Mr Smedley provides regulatory advice and support to i2LResearch Ltd under a non-disclosure agreement. Following a BSc in chemistry & plant biology, Murray followed a career at Nickerson Seeds, Omex Agriculture, and later Doff Portland, where he was Technical Manager, in charge of all regulatory affairs, product liability & new product development. Since 2002 he has run an independent consultancy business - Barkwith Associates. Murray has over 15 years experience in all aspects of regulatory affairs within both UK professional and amateur sectors, combined with general agronomy experience and good industry knowledge
Professor Peter Langley - Consultant
Professor Langley has a long and distinguished career in the area of insect pest control, with particular expertise in the area of flying insect pests. Peter is responsible for a number of flying insect and environmental monitoring projects.
Cheryl Rigg - Study Director
Working in our i2LNorthEast field station, Cheryl brings good organisational skills to the Company. She has previously worked on feral goat population studies in Northumberland and does voluntary work for the Northumberland Wildlife Trust. Cheryl enjoys scuba diving, and is a trained first-aider.
Lucie Scriven - Trials Officer
After Graduating from her BSc (Hons) in 2005, Lucie has worked on biodiversity research projects in Madagascar, the Philippines and Africa and is a member of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management. Lucie joined the i2L North East branch in 2008 and has worked on a variety of GEP Efficacy trials covering a variety of common agricultural pests, principally Mollusc field and caged arena studies, focusing on bait formulations and product development. |
